Announcing Open Measures
Open Measures is committed to the open-source intelligence community (OSINT) in the fight against disinformation and online extremism.
SMAT is now Open Measures.
Today, we announce our new name and branding — steps that reflect our continued commitment to combating online disinformation and extremism head-on. At Open Measures, we democratize tools to uncover online extremism and defend against offline harm.
We at Open Measure are taking proactive steps to track dangerous online activity and are putting data in the hands of researchers committed to threat prevention. From research on activity leading up to the attack on the US Capitol on Jan. 6, to insights on the current conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, we are unwavering in our dedication to shining a light on the darkest parts of the internet.
Open Measures
As part of our ongoing evolution, we are thrilled to introduce our new name: Open Measures. The name “Open Measures” draws from the concept of active measures — political warfare using coordinated disinformation to undermine or exploit an adversary. Our new name embodies our mission to keep many parts of our platform open source, helping all users sift through troves of data across the web to uncover harmful and deceptive content.
We’re motivated by our mission of enabling the OSINT community to trace and piece together online threats. Our logo, made up of conjoined puzzle pieces, represents that.
Open-Source First
While our name and look may be changing, one thing remains constant: our commitment to open source principles. We firmly believe that openness and collaboration are essential in the fight against disinformation and extremism. That’s why we pledge to continue developing and maintaining a core component of our platform as open source, available for public use. As always, anyone can access hundreds of millions of data points¹ across fringe social networks.
Open-source software empowers communities to come together, contribute, and innovate collectively. It ensures transparency, security, and trust in our work. By keeping an open source component at the heart of Open Measures, we invite developers, researchers, and activists worldwide to join us in making the digital world a safer place.
Join Us in the Fight
Disinformation and online extremism remain persistent challenges, but we can build a safer and more inclusive digital world if we work together. Whether you’re a developer, a researcher, or anyone passionate about fostering a healthier online environment, there’s a place for you in the Open Measures community.
If you’re compelled and able, consider donating to our efforts. Your contributions, facilitated by our partners at Open Collective, allow us to continue to build open source technology.
