The Electronic Frontier Foundation published a two-part guide this week advising readers on how to protect themselves from doxxing attacks — first by locking down their digital footprint before anything happens, then by responding if an attack is already underway. Both installments, written by EFF Senior Staff Technologist Daly Barnett, point to Open Measures as a resource for tracking how harassment campaigns spread across platforms.
In Part I: Prevention and Footprint Management, Barnett recommends Open Measures to help track the spread of coordinated harassment attacks across platforms:
“If you’re the focus of coordinated attacks that span from online communities to media outlets participating in the harassment, a service like Open Measures is worth looking into. It tracks, maps, and analyzes the spread of hateful information online. They provide free access to their open-source API, so with some technical fancy-footwork, you can automate this process.”
Part II: Incident Response also mentions Open Measures as a tool to help track mentions of keywords (like names) by hostile actors:
“For a more sophisticated approach, you could use a tool like Open Measures to automate the task of tracking coordinated campaigns.”
